#7 Brain Hacks - Why Brain Hacks Work

Hi everyone,
Exam season is here and so is your cheat sheet.
All year, we've shared Brain Hacks rooted in neuroscience: practical techniques that work because they align with how your brain processes and stores information. Before you close your laptop for the summer, we wanted to bring it all together with one last deep dive - the science behind why Brain Hacks work.
Understanding biology gives you something more powerful than a list of tips: it gives you a framework you can apply to any learning challenge, now and throughout your career.
Read on, apply what fits, and good luck with your exams. You've got this.
#7 Brain Hacks - Why Brain Hacks Work
This final video in the series explains the biological foundation behind everything we've covered this year. Understanding it will change the way you approach every study session, not just now, but long-term.
Why does this matter? Because knowing the why behind a technique makes you far more likely to use it and use it well.
The three stages of learning
Your brain processes new knowledge in three distinct stages, and most study struggles happen because we're not supporting all three:
- Intake - how we acquire and gather new information. This is what most people think studying is, but it's only the first step.
- Encoding - how we classify, examine and store knowledge. This is where real learning happens, and where most techniques fall short.
- Retrieval - how we access and use what we've learned. If you can't retrieve it under pressure, say, in an exam, you haven't fully learned it yet.
What Brain Hacks do:
- They remove the barriers that block each of the three stages from working effectively.
- They're designed to be consistent with your brain's biology, not to fight it.
- Applying them makes you an ultra-learner: someone who learns faster, retains more, and performs better under pressure.
